Advantages of Ultrasonic Examination of Cylinders
- Ultrasonic Examination eliminates many of the problems associated with hydrostatic testing.
- By preventing moisture and other contaminates from being introduced into the cylinder, considerable time is saved from not having to drain and dry the cylinder.
- Cylinders do not have to be de-valved
- Avoids the possibility of valve damage
- Avoids the potential danger of cross threading when a valve is replaced
- Residual contents do not have to be drained.
- Ultrasonic Examination provides a more thorough and detailed test than a standard hydrostatic test.
- Ultrasonic Examination testing measures the thickness of cylinder walls over their full lengths. Cylinders do not pass the test if, at any point, the thickness of their walls falls below the established minimum.
- UE will identify small faults, including; cracks, corrosion, pits and gouges, that are not always found during the internal visual inspection required as part of a standard hydrostatic test.
- Department of Transportation has waived the required internal visual examination for cylinders used in certain services when using UE because UE produces such highly accurate measurements.
- Specialty Gas Cylinders
- Water is considered a contaminant in cylinders used for the storage of specialty gasses that are utilized for manufacture of electronic components. These cylinders often receive special surface treatments and, after hydrostatic testing, those treatments must be re-applied, followed by a thorough drying of the cylinder interior.
- Save Time + Test More Cylinders per Hour = Better for Your Business
- The bottom line is that UE testing allows you to test more cylinders per hour, with fewer employees!
- The average UE Testing Operation can re-furbish and re-qualify 200+ 9” Steel Cylinders with three employees on a single eight hour shift.
- The average UE Testing Operation can re-furbish and re-qualify 300+ 4” Medical E Cylinders with three employees on a single eight hour shift.
